The St. Benedict Medal is a Christian sacramental medal that contains symbols and text related to the life of Saint Benedict of Nursia, used by Roman Catholics, Lutherans, Western Orthodox, Anglicans, and Methodists, in the Benedictine Christian tradition, especially votarists and oblates 1. The medal is based on the tradition that Saint Benedict was known for his power over the Devil, with the Holy Cross as his efficacious instrument to make the Devil flee. The medal is also known as the Jubilee Medal of St. Benedict and was first made in 1880 to commemorate the fourteenth centenary anniversary of St. Benedict’s birth by the Archabbey of Monte Cassino, the most important monastery established by the Saint in the 6th century

The medal has two sides, with the front side depicting St. Benedict holding a cross in his right hand and the book of his Rule in his left hand. The back side of the medal has a cross with the letters C S S M L - N D S M D around the perimeter, which stand for Crux Sacra Sit Mihi Lux - Non Draco Sit Mihi Dux, meaning “May the Holy Cross be my light - Let not the dragon be my guide” . The medal is believed to have many spiritual benefits associated with its pious use, including warding off evil and temptation, obtaining the conversion of sinners, help for women during childbirth, strength in preserving purity, granting the grace of a happy death, protection during storms, and interceding for curing diseases.
